Finally played Mafia and

IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The physics blow. Enemies can push you off the road easily when you can barely budge them. They can catch up to you in a second when it takes you atleast a minute to get away. If you run by a polic officer, they go after YOU for speeding instead of the car behind you with 4 gangsters shooting tommy guns. And the environment just doesn't feel 'right' to me. Anyway, what did you think of this game?

well.. I find it pretty good so far but I agree that it's realistic while unrealistic in some really strange ways.. like I get ticketed for speeding but not for driving on the wrong side of the road.. driving wrong way down one way street, driving on the sidewalk.. running reds etc...

actually I find it runs better than GTA3.. but then that seems to be a weak port since lots of people with various sys configs have performance problems with it.

I love this game. The atmosphere is really great and I think it's pretty realistic. I don't think it would be fun if cops were chasing you if you're driving on the wrong side or something like that.

Thats exactly what i thought about gta3, could hardly bear to play it. I havnt played mafia yert, ill be getting it this weekend so i cant compare yet :P

i think it's one of the best games i've played in recent months. it's fun to drive around in free ride with my steering wheel setup...

Yes, the game has issues like you say with the cops and cars chasing you... the racing level is a little tough for those that aren't so adept at racing games unlike myself...(excuse me for sounding big-headed) and a few level loading issues... but overall i find it a very good game, better than GTA3. The storyline has me captive... i want to know what happens next, and stuff. It's a break from reality that i've come to enjoy. I hope those issues are addressed in some kind of patch, though, but i still reccomend it to someone if they come across it. The game is beautiful at times, but you pay for it in sluggishness, and i think it captures the 30's like those old mob films. Also, the city is very alive, you really feel like you're in a living city, moreso than GTA.

The chases themselves are kind of weak... I've found that the best way to end a chase is to simply get out of the car and have a good ol fashioned shootout instead.

And as for the shootouts themselves: Man, I haven't had this much fun with a virtual gun before. :)

That racing level really does suck ass.

I'm a racing game veteran, but because of the supposedly realistic physics (digital keyboard controls and realistic physics don't mix) it is bloody rock!

The fact that if you flip your car over on its roof for so long you are automatically disqualified, even if your car lands back on its wheels, is completely crap!

Since when do Mafioso compete in Formula 1 style races? Its all guns guns guns, money money money, and a helping of Italian hospitality (of the female kind), not "shift to second gear and take this hairpin bend!"

Other than that, I love it. Best game I've played in ages. I've always wanted to recreate scenes from the Untouchables. Today I sort of recreated the scene on the staircase in the railway station :) Great fun.

Ok well i can under stand what your saying - it starts out REALLY slow - dont expect any GTA3 style stuff here.

BUT!! if you play a little while, youll get the fast cars, youll be able to out run the police, youll use the tommy guns etc...

There are problems and i agree that the acceleration is terrible on the cars (even the later ones) and that some of the missions are just driving from one place to another. Which is boring as hell!

But after a while you realize that this game is REALLY REALLY well done. Its all very cinematic, the cutscenes are GREAT!! The voices and most of the animations are really perfect - this is definitely a possible game of the year!

So far I would say it sucks too, not exciting or captivating at all, but to be fair I haven't played it that much yet, mainly because I play it on my dad's PC because of the steep requirements.

Does seem to be a bit disappointing though, especially with the time taken to dl 3 cds.

For anyone having performance problems, try dissabling the sound from the seperate setup icon. Far from ideal I know, but I got a BIG performance increase by doing this. (And sorry to all the people running 90mhz pentiums, this wont help you:D).

Theres meant to be a patch on the way to sort this.

As for the game, Im really enjoying it. The graphics are brillaint in places, the missions are fun ( apart from that tricky race level), and theres a lot of variety.

The city does lack a bit of atmosphere, hardly anything is interactive, and exploring doesnt reward you with the cool stuff you get in gta3.

definalty worth getting though, and once you get past the first few missions, it gets very addictive.

The thing that annoys me the most about it is that the driving bits, which there are a lot of, are just unbearably, excrucatingly boring. There's no excitement in driving in a really slow car all the way across town, just to be told you've got to drive back.

Besides that, I think its pretty good, but that does really annoy me.

Well, opposed to a lot others here i enjoy the driving bits more (a lot more) than the shooting stuff, was the same with GTA3. And i won the race in the first try, no big deal, but you guys are right, the cars could have been a lot faster IMO.

Edit: I just made the Hotel hit (after just about 18 tries) only to find myself shooting my way through at least 8 cops over some rooftops with almost no ammo and no idea where to go. I got sick with it after another 18 tries, uninstalled it.

Hmm, interesting... lots of ppl are telling me it's better than gta3, but I hardly can imagina as gta3 was the best game I played for years. However, I'll finish my download soon and will try it - hope it's as good as some ppl say :)

I find this game quite fun, how ever I haven't had the experience of playing GTA 3 so I can't compare it to that.

The physics aren't that unrealistic other than when the enemy vehicals start to push you... you guys need to remember that the cars back then were solid steel not aluminum and had alot of weight to them and prolly had solid axels not 4 wheel independant suspension.
The Engines where not fuel injected and didn't have the power they do today. I think there should have been more V12 powered cars rather than the V6's that the stuck in there.

As for the police... well there the police :p not exactly the brightest ppl.

Other than that I'd submit my for for game of the year.

Game of the Year? You're kidding yourself, I'd take GTA 3 overt this any day. It might not have been quite as deep, but at least it was always enjoyable.

hmmm, finally I played it and I must say - GTA3 is MUCH better. Much more fun. I only played it for half an hour or so, but I didn't really like it unlike gta3 which I was immediately addicted to. In Mafia the cars are too slow, you only drive around in the beginning without having any fun and the police is too powerful. Maybe the story is deeper, but I don't play a boring game for a story.
