I'm building a system for my in-laws, and I'm having a spot of bother. Typically, it would happen the one time I'm building for my in-laws, rather than for someone else.

The system is a 1.1GHz Duron on a ABIT KX7-333 mobo. A 256MB stick of PC2100 (CAS 2.5) DDR-RAM populates the DIMM1 slot, and a Voodoo Banshee 16MB AGP card in the video slot.

IDE devices and floppy drives are connected up too.

When I power the machine up, everything powers up (fans spin, hard drive whirs etc.) but I don't get any video output to the monitor. I know the Banshee card is fine 'cos I had it in my PC up until about four months ago.

Instead, I get the following beep pattern:

Two second beep
Five second pause
Two second beep
Five second pause
...
...
ad infinatum.

I can't find any info. on this beep code at all! It is an AwardBIOS (I think) and I'm baffled.

I've tried unplugging video card and replugging it, I've tried reseating the memory, the lot.

I've decided that its either the CPU thats knackered, or the memory stick is. I haven't got any other sticks of DDR that I can test with, though.

Any ideas, peeps?

http://www.phoenix.com/en/support/bios+support/awardbios/award+error+codes.htm

"The only AwardBIOS beep code indicates that a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information. This beep code consists of a single long beep followed by two short beeps. Any other beeps are probably a RAM (Random Access Memory) problems"

sounds like the RAM.

Just a wild guess: Have you checked whether the Voodoo Banshee is a 3 Volt (?) AGP card and the mainboard does only support the newer 1.5 Volt (?) cards?
I'm not sure if it's 3.0 and 1.5 Volts, but you know what I mean :)

Seems that some of the DIMM slots on the mobo are knackered, all works fine if the DDR-RAM is plugged into slot 4.

Off to get an RMA then... <sigh>

Cheers for the replies,all.

As you have found out it is the memory, if this ever happens it is always best to start with just the processor in then start adding components one at a time, If you looked in the book that came with the mobo, it should tell you in there, its usually under "Starting up for the first time" for your future reference..

same thin happened to me, started removing parts and replacing them... turned out the mobo underneath was mounted incorrectly and was making contact with the case
