A modchip for my Gamecube :D
A few more practice runs with the soldering then I'll install her. Good thing there's only a couple solders on it, because frankly I'm not the greatest.
I'll keep you guys posted as I wreck my gc ;)

how do u burn games for gamecube? aren't the discs non standard, do you just cut down a DVD+R?
you can buy minidvd's (just like minicd's) which is what the gc uses.
It's only protection is an inner barcode that normal dvd readers/writers can't reach...the modchip basically bypasses the lid switch and lets you do a disc swap to any burned game.
As for status, I've opened my gc up and wow these solder points are small... it's practice time on this old sound card ;)
Good luck with the soldering

The real problem with soldering electronics is not the size but the heat. Even if you use a low-watt tool you still have to do it quickly because you could fry the neighbouring elements.
Very true McGuy, be careful just to eliminate the possibility of loosing some of your gamecube's vital components.
heh, that would definately suck :p
What kind of warrenty do you have on the GC? Just wondering...

I've been told (apparently second hand from a representative at nintendo) that the only major difference between the cube discs and standard mini-dvds is that the cube discs are written in reverse (ie. reversed motor polarity in a DVD writer) and some subcode information (ie. the special barcode you mentioned). Let us know what happens! ;) I'm sure there are lots of us who are chomping at the bit to find out.

BTW, use a heat-sink (it's like a little clip) down-wire from the solder point to protect other components that might overheat (such as sensitive ICs, etc). Should be able to pick up a good one at an electronics parts surplus store. Also, one of those cold-heat things might be a wise investment in this case. ;)
if I find I'm having problems soldering then I'll probably pick up a heat sink. From what I've read and been told from friends who have soldered is that to just not keep the soldering iron on for more than 2 seconds. Which from my practice on this sound card I'm doing :)
As for warranty, not sure... Probably pretty good since I got it in december, and I didn't come across any seals that would void the warranty.

When I first read the title I was thinking "Ewwww... Deo, put it away! Put it away!"
Anyway, sounds like a cool project :)
bah, first try one of solders broked during reassembly, so I could write to the chip.. .just it didn't do anything... (at least nothing was broken :))
here goes attempt 2, (sitting here waiting for the soldering iron to heat up again)
w00t!

That's the latest boot loader, it boots to that instead of a game then you can select what you're going to do. Sweet.
Apparently the next version is going to be even more options, I can't wait. It should be released soon.
If anyone else plans on doing this, don't hesitate to ask me about it as I have a couple of tips that helped me.
Cheers
Now I Just have to wait till my minidvd's arrive, which should be thursday :D

Woo, nice, Deo:D
Steady hand - must be all those beers :)
hehe, I was shaking like a little girl when I started :p Then a couple beer later I was fine ;)
So long as you didn't squeal like a little girl (though SJB could be into that kinda stuff) :D

you can even use normal dvds you just have to remove some part....i seriously tinkering with modding my cube too...
You should try doing PS2 Deo, the first ones I did had 42 wires to solder, thankfully there down to 15 now :)
Looks good tho..
Yeah toeffy, you can just pull off the case and put a full dvd on it... though I doubt the laser can read the whole thing.
Mall, haha yeah... I wouldn't want that to be my first soldering project...lol
finally got a bios that works (damn latest laser). :D
Still a couple games give me read errors, but hopefully they'll be fixed in the next couple releases.
NFL Street 2 seems to be working nicely :D

Yeah you have to remove the whole lid, than you can use normal dvds too.
@deo: great work man ;) i was thinking about buying the viper too but i still shit my pants about opening the precious gc and i cant afford a new one. I'm quite used to soldering though so perhaps I'll try someday. Have you tried any gc isos yet? Are you totally satisfied with the chip. Tell us what you know ;)
yeah, I'm completely satisfied...
Take it I have one of the latest revisions of the laser/mobo so there were some issues with read errors. But since the latest version of the bios it's been sweet.
The modding part was fairly easy too. It was my first attempt at soldering.

Nice work deo.. I have issues with micro-soldering too.. it feels like performing microsurgery on ants..

hmmm interesting, I modded my xbox, soldered in the mod chip... micro-surgery for sure. I may be interested in modding my GC... where to get the chip? where to get solder pointdiagram, etc? how do you back up the dvd's? what software etc. send the info on to me please
a couple new bios' have came out for my gc/modchip and now supports no-swap :D
/me is very happy :D
for those who are interested in where I got my chip, it was from hxxp://www.modchipworld.com/ Mainly because they're run out of my city and know the owners :)
just modded by boss' gamecube successfully :D
I should start charging for it :p
