simple question, Seagate or Maxtor? (ATA 100 for the Seagate, ATA 133 for the Maxtor, Seagate is a wee bit cheaper)

yeah these are the only two brands my local pc parts store stocks for non SCSI hds..

SeaGates apparently get a bit hotter than the Maxtors, but I'm using a 60gig at the moment, and haven't had any problems with it

I'd go for Seagate, I have their 80 Gig Barracuda IV, and it rocks :)

I would say seagate running 2x40 & 1x60 with no problems at all..

i would recommend the barracuda iv drives over maxtor's d740x series because the latter's idle noise can be annoying. if you can, however, wait for the barracuda v series to arrive - shouldn't be too long.

I own a Seagate Barracuda IV and my friend owns a Maxtor D740X.

They are currently the top performing 80GB HDDs out (except for the Special Edition Western Digital drives). I think I recieved a dud, because my Seagate doesn't do as well (at all) at the beginning of the HDTach benchmark, and his drive flies.

Don't fall into the advertising trap of ATA133. It does virtually nothing. Remember the jump from ATA66 to ATA100? Zero percent performance increase? Well guess what, ATA100 to ATA133.... even less.

With both drives, you'll get amazing performance. Just remember to get 7200RPM drives and you'll be fine. (Go Seagate!)

yeah, I know ATA 133 makes absolutely no difference.. ok.. I guess I'll go with a Seagate.. although I guess I could go look for that WD HD if it really is a lot better

the wd is better, but it is also more expensive than the seagate or maxtor drives.

What exactly are those WD ones called?

reep

the 80gb model is called WD800JB, but there are also 100/120/180/200 gb models, named respectively. just pay attention to the 'JB' at the end and you should be fine.

ATA 133 and ATA 100?? sound different?? not really
so why pay more for something you don't need.

Both are good quality hard drives, I don't think you will go wrong with either.

yeah, i'm actually running a wb 80gb special edition and a 60 gb seagate barracuda.

both are great drives, though the wb does have a defnite speed advantage, but i think that the seagate is quieter...

overall, i would suggest the wb, as the hd is almost always the biggest bottleneck and spending the most money on that would be the best

Seagate all the way man! :)

well.. I ended up getting a seagate.. although that WD is really tempting I simply can't find it anywhere around here.. would've had to order online... although I have no problems with online shopping normally, it's simply too inconveniant should there be a problem with the HD.. and I was a wee bit concerned about that since a friend of mine had to exchange a HD about 3 times before he got one that worked correctly right when the store warranty ran out..which is exactly why I also bought extended warranty for the first time on anything :)

Just stay away from the IBM drives :)

I've somehow managed to keep my IBM 60GXP running fine since October 2001, but I expect it'll die soon knowing my luck.

The only condolence is that with the refund money I can probably get an 80GB drive instead of the 40GB I have at the moment :)

you're really a lucky guy, kgrandpa. :)
when my two 45gxp's died, however, i didnt get a refund but replacement drives - same shitty series, though. :(
never gonna buy a ibm hdd again.

Of what I heared the problem with IBM drives is that they are only specified for running 15h per day or so... They are not made for 24/7 use. The reason for this seems to be their high temperature.

I've had no problems with my IBMs so far but I've heard about many people complaining,

I've always been a Quantum Fireball-guy. Never had a single prob. with one during the last 6 years or so. Too bad they're gone :( At work I've seen many IBM's and Maxtors go down.

I'll soon have to buy a new one and I have no idea for what brand to go.

I've a 40gb Maxtor and a 30gb Western Digital both 7200.

Each perform great.

If I replaced them with a single drive, 120gb for instance, would I lose performance?

Hellraiser666

I guess it would depend on the number of plates on each drive.
If the three drives had the same number of plates, the 120Gb should be faster because of higher recording density!!!
