so just to get this straight, not all xbox games are dvd...and in fact some games can be d/l'd and burnt to a cdr and then using a modchip you can play these games.. is this correct... because if so I trhink I will get the kids an xbox for xmas. How available are these games to get? anyone know the ratio of cdr games compared to dvd games?

Yup you are correct bud, you can also burn some onto CDRW's as well. They say you get the best results out of burning them onto a DVD-R but you can get away with the CD media. The mod chips are very tricky to install unless you are an expert at soldering. My best suggestion is to buy a pre-modded XBOX from some of the websites out there. You will pay a premium for them, but you don't have to worry about screwing up the installation

Homer i have saw you build things on your TV show, You might want to reconsider buying a premade one LOL
I think the latest modchip is only 32 wires to solder, and on surface mounted ic's.
So if you are a confident solderer, and have a fine tipped iron you should be ok..
